Do You Feel Like it’s the End of the Road if You’ve Had to File For Unemployment?

I had a client that was working in sales for a company that owed her about $150,000 in commissions. She lives in a state that is heavily enmeshed in the automotive industry and where the unemployment level has just skyrocketed. Her company was also connected with this industry and because of that she ended up being laid off, but the company still owed her a considerable amount of money.
The main reason she hasn’t been paid her commission yet is that they really don’t have it; they came up with a plan to pay it out over a period of time, but this amount had really built up over a long period of time and she was starting to get worried about it.
She was in talks with them about how they were going to pay the outstanding amount, and they actually kind of avoided her for a few weeks before they came back with their news.
This is what they told her – that they had re-looked at her commissions and the agreement they had made with her, and decided that they had miscalculated everything. From their new perspective on the agreement, they should have been paying her on net profit rather than gross sales.
Now, I looked at her agreement with her and we saw that it was written very loosely, and this company has a history of having very vague sort of agreements where one person will agree to something and it won’t be given in writing – a lot of things like that – and of course my client was very upset about this.
Well, then they came back and basically told her that rather than them owing her these commissions, SHE actually owed THEM money, and that they would be contacting her within 30 days to resolve her debt to them.
Now, you can imagine – she was absolutely petrified! She was out of work; she thought she was going to be getting $150,000 – she actually thought she would be able to live on that because she didn’t get any kind of severance or anything. She’d been able to file for unemployment, but that was it.
Now, she was waking up in the middle of the night, covered in a cold sweat, totally petrified about what was going to happen to her!
When we next met I told her that as difficult as it may be to avoid, focusing in on all of these things that you don’t want – all the ‘what-ifs’ – they are not putting you in any kind of vibrational proximity to any kind of solution to this issue, whatsoever.
I said to her, “You now, reality really can change on a dime! We could be sitting here talking next week, and it could be totally different. But the only way it is going to be totally different is that you’ve got to surrender it.”
I discussed with her how she really needed to make a connection with what she sees as her inner team or her inner coach and just totally surrender it – to say, “This is just out of my hands. I’m surrendering it, and I’m asking for a solution.
“I need money – I need this whole thing to work out. I don’t care if it’s that the company somehow comes to their senses – that someone decides to have a conscience – I don’t care what it is, but I need some kind of solution.”
I told her, “Now, every time you wake up in the middle of the night or any time you worry about it, you just need to distract yourself.”
I call it the Law of Distraction – it’s like if you were driving in your car and you look over and see a dead animal on the side of the road. Don’t you just kind of look away and think to yourself, ‘Oh, don’t look at that!’ You need to distract yourself, because that image is very disturbing!
It’s the same idea here – thinking and dwelling on possible future outcomes that are not positive can be very disturbing.
I told her, “Just distract yourself. Know that a solution is on its way. Put the energy out there that you’re expecting a solution, but that you are just turning this over to God and saying, ‘It’s out of my hands. I’m expecting a solution. I’m not sure what I should be doing next – give me some kind of sign, and show me what should happen next.’”
My client did manage her energy in this way and made a conscious decision to hand it all over.
So, she had been putting her resumes out for sales positions, and a few days after this conversation, she got a phone call from a lawyer – a partner in a law firm that specialized in creating contracts for sales commissions and resolving these kind of disputes.
She got this phone call, and the guy said, “I was really very intrigued by your resume. I know you’re not exactly in this industry, but for some reason I just felt this connection to call you, and I wanted to find out more about you.”
(Now, let me tell you – there is really nothing on her resume that would be intriguing to a partner of an attorney firm – it’s really just a very standard kind of resume)
What really happened is that she had shifted her energy in such a way that this person felt compelled to talk to her. He didn’t even know why he felt compelled to want to talk to her!
So he began explaining more about his firm. He said to her, “We deal with sales commissions contracts and things like that, and we also assist in areas when occasionally there might be some kind of misunderstanding in agreements and contracts, and oftentimes the sales people are the ones who really end up holding the bag.”
Well, she proceeded to tell him about her situation! He invited her in to talk about both – kind of killing two birds with one stone. She went in and talked to him about everything that had been happening, and he agreed to represent her.
He said that he would call the company and send some letters on her behalf, and that if they did need to go into any legal arbitration, he would take her case on contingency, simply getting a percentage of whatever she ended up getting back from what the company owed her.
Now, most attorneys won’t do this in this kind of situation – they really have to believe very strongly in your case. He told her it was not something he would usually do but he understood that she wasn’t working right now, so he was willing to make the exception.
He also told her that he was really looking for someone who would be able to go out and talk about these services and really bring in business for his firm.
So, in less than one week, she went from having to file for unemployment and losing out badly on a debt from her company, to not only getting an attorney that she wouldn’t have to pay, but also getting an independent contractor role with this firm to be their salesperson!
She got the job, a solution is on its way, and all of it came from managing her energy and practicing the Law of Distraction!
