Is the Fear of Technology Holding You Back From an Online Business Opportunity?

I began to address the inner aspect of this idea in my last post, and I’d like to delve into it deeper – both because I understand that place of feeling like technology is your worst nightmare in your business, and because I’ve had several people come to me with that same struggle recently.
My bottom line is, I really believe that you need to find your strengths and play to your strengths – if something is not your strength, get someone else to do it!
I am not what you’d call a technology maven – it’s just not something that’s a natural ability for me.
My daughter has to do the VCR and the tVO – I still can’t figure out how to get the tvo activated! I have to go to my 11-year old and say, “Here, can you show me how to do this? Can you program this? Can you turn the sprinklers on? Can you program that?”…yeah, I can’t do any of that stuff.
But I don’t care – I just make sure I have people around me that can do it! If you’re not a technical person, you need to just accept it. Come to a place of acceptance: “I’m not a technical person and I need to find other people to do it. I need to create systems for other people to do it; I need to engage other people in ways so that they’ll be willing to do it – all so I can do the things I’m better at!”
If someone were to say to me, “You need to learn how to do HTML”, I would respond, “I would rather have a root canal!” That kind of thing gives me no joy – I don’t care about it at all!
I used to feel like I needed to know how to do these things because I have a business that uses these technological aspects. It was kind of along the lines of how can I be sure it’s done right?
But I really let go of that and said, “You know what, it’s not my brilliance. I’m going to find people that are brilliant at it or create ways that I don’t need to have that particular aspect, and trust that I’ll attract the right people that will do it well for me.”
It’s all about finding where your brilliances are – and you know if you’re technical or not! It’s like the idea of being ‘just a little’ pregnant – you’re either technical, or you’re not!
There are degrees of technical ability, but I still believe that anything you can delegate, you should. Find a way to make it into a system, and focus the rest of your energy on the one thing you’re brilliant at.
That idea comes from Mark Victor Hansen’s book, The Power of Focus. I read it a number of years ago, and in it he said we’re all good at one thing. If you focus 90% of your energy on that one thing and delegate everything else, you will see your income go through the roof, and you’ll never have to worry about money again.
When you’re putting all your energy into something like that, that you’re not only good at, but you love doing – can you imagine where that puts you vibrationally?
- You believe you’re good at it
- You are good at it
- Therefore you’re even better at it
- AND you feel good about it!
You’re now in total vibrational alignment with Manifestation – nothing is going to hold you back from that online business opportunity!
The other thing I will say when it comes to technology (if you’re in the same boat as I am), is find a good technology mentor.
I need to have people that can translate my needs to the technical people – because I can’t even talk to the technical people! They speak a different language, so I need to have people that can say, “OK, I live over here in the world of Marketing and I also live over here in the world of Geekdom, and I can bridge that gap for you.”
Begin creating the connections with people that can do that and finding technology mentors – don’t try to do it all by yourself!
Finally, know your abilities.
For example, think of putting together a shopping cart for your website.
One person might say, “Oh, that doesn’t seem to complicated…it’s not too big a deal. It looks like you just hook up the autoresponder, do this, do that, go in and do that – it’s easier than I thought!”
If that’s the kind of person you are, you can be the one to go and take the teleseminar on how to set up autoresponders with your shopping cart!
On the other hand, if you’re the kind of person who looks at a shopping cart and thinks, “Oh my goodness, that would take me twenty times longer than anyone else…it makes me feel glazed over even thinking about it!” – then don’t even attempt it!
When it comes to your online business opportunity, don’t get stuck in a box of thinking that you have to do it yourself, or that you can’t attract the right people to support and help you with those elements.
And that really IS less complicated than you think!

Very true. I feel my talent is writing, not marketing or selling. Unfortunately it is difficult to delegate to people if you can’t find the right ones.
I dont think fear of modern technologies could set a person back from developing an online business.
On the oposite, it should be entusiasthic about it, cause we now have many gadgets and softwares that can help us outsource the hard work.
johny’s last blog post..Japanese miracle: 145 inch plasma with 1mm thick
Agree ..fully agree. You should try to be master of “some” instead of “jack of all trades”. Before you jump into any kind of online business, do churn your skills and see what you are good at and then polish your talent and plan your online venture.
Try and try, that is the key to success, giving up shouldn?t be included on our dictionary (i think).
Im a newbie in Online Business and i am still reading a lot on the internet about how to manage an Online Business
I don’t think that a lack of tech knowledge is an obstacle to build an online business. In fact some of them most successful small business, have a very simple design, no flash, and often a good copy is the key to attract sales and customers.
An online business is great once you get it going. Getting it started is the hard part. There are so many ways to make money on the internet and so many scammers trying to get you to buy their latest method. Be careful. Before I became successful, I spent a lot of money on crappy gurus. Thanks for the post.
Good post! Business plans should sell your idea. Be precise and to the point in writing a business plan. A well-written plan can get you connected to your dreams.
Yea, I like your views regarding brilliance. I really wish people stop thinking they can’t do it. The point is to just do it.
I also plan to put up an Online Business because the internet is also a good place to sell products. The number of Internet users and potential buyers from the internet is also growing.
I was just now searching for about this when I discovered your post. I’m just stopping by to say that I very much liked reading this post, it’s really clear and well written. Are you thinking of writing more on this? It appears like there’s more material here for future posts.
i want to setup an Online Business with a credit card processor and i am still researching about it. my current online business is just selling handbags and some stuffs on e-bay.
Fear of tech can be crippling for a business. If you aren’t willing to shift and change your technology, then as a business you’ll be outdated and likely falling behind.
I have always looked forward for posts which are informative and something i can use for my reference purpose.
People shouldn’t be fear of technology. It creates a lot of possibilites. Great post.
I find its usually one of two things when I let the technology stop me – either its my ego that just wants to feel good as the one who “made” it happen but clearly has no idea of how to do it or two I’m creating excuses as to why I haven’t moved in a particular direction.
Either way, its a great moment of clarity and once I know what it is – lack of information or fear, its much easier to either outsource it or get clear on what it is that I’m throwing up roadblocks.
I agree with this post as well as with other comments in here. We don’t have to fear technology because, we, humans created it right? We should have the full control on those kind of technology.
